St Georges Hill, Surrey 1

This 3 acre garden has been re-developed over a period of 2 years on the concept of flow aimed at renewing the garden to be in keeping with the lifestyle of the new owners. Spaces are defined close to the house by linear hedges of Portuguese laurel and a pale Indian stone is used for the main terraces, swimming pool and entertaining areas. The modernised pool and new pool house frame the swimming pool garden which is backed by lawn and shade loving perennials and grasses.

Wide borders run along the main terrace planted with a line of multi stemmed Amelanchier and a range of block planted grasses and perennials. Two reflective pools break the border to frame wide steps down to a new plateau of formal lawn. Planting and hedges flow down hill through meadow areas and past a belt of birch trees and spring flowering bulbs towards a secret garden.

On the opposite side of the garden a wide border billows with tall grasses and perennials planted into fluid drifts. Behind is a cool and shady woodland path which drops down slope to a large timber entertaining deck alongside a small lake of reflective water. Bog planting creates an architectural backdrop to this terrace.

Flowering peaks are late spring/early summer and late summer into autumn. This scheme recently won an award at the APL awards 2011
