St Georges Hill, Surrey 2
Due to a new and contemporary extension in glass and fibreglass the client realised that the garden needed to be re-designed to be compatible. The new design creates a garden within a larger space with views from the house looking out into the existing lawns and boundary planting.
The garden uses dyed concrete in large square and rectangular pieces as the main paving material for the 60m long terrace with matching grey green gravel as a textured surface and expansion joint system. The gravel spreads across all main planting areas and to the driveway and parking court to the front of the house.
The client requested a semi industrial quality which became one of the conceptual strands running through the garden. The planting relates to the local Surrey Heath habitats of grasses such as Molinia and Deschampsia with pine and birch. More decorative architectural plant materials was introduced into the palette with some restrained colour provided by perennials such as Salvia, Geranium and Centranthus.
Long steps accommodate elegant level changes and rendered walls break down the long space into more intimate areas. The walls also act as subtle lighting elements in the garden as uplighters wash these surfaces with light.
The focal point is a 13m long infinity edge reflecting pool which accommodates the 600mm level change down to the lawn alongside.
