Wimbledon Garden 1

This is a plant lovers garden which was recently re-designed to match the new build house and to help in clarifying the structure and layout of the planting and the garden as a whole.

Several trees were removed to bring more light into the garden and the existing vegetable garden was retained in its original format and location. Beyond that, the garden needed to provide a greater variety and increased area for planting whilst creating a strong designed character.

Yew hedges were used to break down the garden into a series of sub-spaces and planting then designed on a seasonal basis around the garden. In part this stemmed from the owner’s love of winter flowering shrubs. New borders for perennials and grasses created the elliptical sweeps which define the lawn.

Closer to the house a basalt terrace creates a contrast to the yellow brick of the house and frames a reflecting pool. The pool is filtered through a gravel bed planted with tall reeds to filter light and create a greater sense of privacy and intimacy within the wider garden. Scented water lilies float on the surface of the pool and close by a tall specimen of Cornus controversa creates a focal point.

This garden has been featured in July 2010 Gardens Illustrated.
