Wimbledon Garden 2

This garden is still under construction with phase 2 completed in Spring 2011.

The existing garden was approaching jungle characteristics with tall evergreen bamboos and Eucalyptus which creates deep shade and a lack of seasonal change. The garden also has a significant slope from top to bottom which had been formed into awkward and complex level changes.

The brief asked for a family garden with levels that allowed children to play easily whilst also allowing for more decorative planting. The existing swimming pool was retained but refurbished and remodelled to create a sharper geometric form. A new pool house and jacuzzi have also been accommodated.

Five new, more simple levels have been created – the first a large entertaining terrace close to the house. The next is a large lawn surrounded by deep borders. The third is a smaller terrace which incorporates a productive garden and the fourth a play lawn. The swimming pool occupies the lowest level.

Wide steps provide access between the levels with steps and terraces paved in new York stone. On each level is a multi stemmed birch tree under planted with streams of perennials. A series of rills splash water gently from one level to the next. Roses and perennials provide colour and dynamic seasonal change throughout the garden.
