Stevenage scheme

The concept for the scheme was “graduate” indicative of the gradual changes in the garden and landscape – from cottage to new build, from garden to stable and from order to the wider landscape. Hedges and verges are used as a device to create different spaces, glimpsed views to the paddocks and contained vistas to the rolling landscape to the west. As the garden rolls gently into the landscape the contoured lawns echo the ancient farming method of ridge and furrow, creating damp and water retentive depressions that will reflect the sky in winter and create new habitats for migrating birds.
